Hafa Adai, Welcome to the CNMI Earth Hour website!

We need your help and support to show world leaders that the CNMI wants action on Climate Change. As an island nation the CNMI stands to be greatly affected by rising sea levels, increased drought, ocean acidification (which can harm our coral reefs), and other aspects of a warmer Earth. Stand with communities worldwide to promote action on Climate Change by turning off your lights between 8:30pm and 9:30pm on Saturday, March 27th. Last year more than 4,100 cities, towns, and municipalities from 88 countries participated, and this year we would like to add the CNMI to that list.

In addition to turning your lights off on the 27th, take a moment to sign up below and add your name to the growing number of participants. Also please visit the main Earth Hour website at www.earthhour.org for more information and to keep up with what other countries are doing.

We will be updating this blog with news, upcoming events, and reminders as we get closer to March 27th, so add us to your favorites list and check back often.

If you would like to volunteer to help with Earth Hour events, would like to become a sponsor, or have recommendations for us please email Aric Bickel at aricbickel@deq.gov.mp

Celebrate Earth Hour 2010 at American Memorial Park

The CNMI team is partnering with American Memorial Park to celebrate Earth Hour!

The park will turn their lights off at 8:30pm this Saturday (March 27th) and the Earth Hour Team will hold a candle-lit gathering commemorating the event. Please come out and join us! Bring your family, friends, candles and musical instruments to celebrate the largest global event of its kind.

More than a billion people are expected to participate from more than 115 countries. Help us make a global statement about the necessisity of action on climate change by turning off your lights and encouraging others to do so.

We are looking for musicians and other preforming artists to preform at the American Memorial Park event. If you would like to preform, please contact Aric Bickel at aricbickel@deq.gov.mp or 664-8513.

Over 115 Countries Participating!

With less than a week before Earth Hour, over 115 countries have signed on to participate!

In 2009, there were 88 countries that turned their lights off in support of action on climate change. The Earth Hour Team had set its goal at 100 countries participating this year, but have far surpassed that benchmark with several more countries expected to sign-on in the coming days.

The event is also expected to garner support from over a billion people world wide. Help us spread the word and increase those numbers in the CNMI by signing up to participate and encouraging your friends, family, and colleagues to do the same.
